Oxidative stress

Free radicals are dangerous if they are exceeding your antioxidant levels. They harm your cells and contributes to chronic diseases such is ischemic heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc.

Information about the level of oxidative stress and antioxidative status can teach us valuable data about the status of our organism (e.g. total antioxidative status in saliva points to risk of parodontopathy).

You can fight against oxidative stress caused by free radical by increased intake of antioxidants. Whether You need them, that is the question that we may answer for You, if You send us Your saliva sample.

We offer measurement of oxidative stress markers for public or scientific community.

For public

If You are interested we may send You collection set for saliva together with short manual how to use and fill the tube. This collection tube will be sent back to us.

After obtaining requested fee to our account No., we perform the analysis and results with interpretation is sent back to You.

For scientific purposes

We are able to measure markers of oxidative and carbonyl stress in samples of plasma, saliva or tissue homogenates for Your research.

malondialdehyd – marker of lipoperoxidation
fructosamine – specific marker of glycated proteins in serum
advanced oxidation protein products – general marker of glycated proteins in serum
advanced glycation end products – marker of carbonyl stress
8-OH-hydroxyguanozin – marker of oxidative damage of nucleic acids
TAC – total antioxidant capacity
FRAP/S – ferric reducing activity of plasma/saliva

Terminology

Free radicals (FR)

Reactive molecules that contains non-paired electron. FR reacts with proteins, lipids, carbonyls and DNA and thus they damage them. However, FR can be neutralized by antioxidant substances.

Oxidative stress (OS)

Imbalance between production of free radicals production and the ability of organism to neutralize them, in favor of free radicals production. OS is related to atherosclerosis, cancer, as well as many other civilization diseases, and aging since the effects of OS are accumulating through time.

MDA/TBARS

Malondialdehyde is a product of oxidative impairment of lipids, and it is the best described marker of OS. TBARS is abbrevation for group of OS markers including MDA. Oxidative stress meauserment is done by detection of TBARS in saliva by attested method.

Antioxidative status (AS)

It is the ability of organism/tissue to defend against free radicals. Various molecules are able to scavenge free radicals. Some enzymes as are glutathion or superoxiddismutase, as well as vitamin C and E belong to such molecules.
